Demurrage
Demurrage is the demurrage fee, which refers to the overdue (overdue) use fee of the container under the control of the carrier or its agent. It usually refers to the overdue use fee of the container at the destination wharf or yard before the consignee clears customs and takes delivery. The time range includes from the time when the box falls to the wharf to the time when it is put forward at the end of customs declaration. Beyond this time limit, the shipping company needs to collect money from you.
For example, the free demurrage given to you by the shipping company is 3 days. If you don’t lift the box out of the port within 3 days, the shipping company will start to charge you for demurrage.
Detention
Detention is the container demurrage fee (also translated as overdue fee), which refers to the overdue (overdue) use fee of the container under the control of the consignee, that is, the container is brought out of the yard or wharf by the consignee after customs clearance without returning the empty container within the specified time. The time range includes from the time when the box is put forward at the wharf to the time when you return the box to the port. Beyond this time limit, the shipping company needs to charge you.
Generally speaking, the free time given by the shipping company = free demurrage + dree detention.
Difference between demurrage demurrage, demurrage demurrage and storage
Storage fee
Note: storage ≠ demurrage
Storage refers to the storage fee (also translated as over stacking fee). The time range includes the time from the arrival of the box at the wharf to the arrival at the wharf after customs declaration. Some people will say that this is not the same as demurrage. The difference between the two is that this fee is not charged by the shipping company, but by the port area.
Free period
Generally speaking, for ports with slow customs clearance, free demurrage will be given a long time. For example, in South Africa, it will be given a maximum of 21 days. Australia may not leave a special demurrage for you. Like free time, these are determined by the strength of each freight forwarding company. However, the super heap storage cost and time are usually fixed.
Charging standard
All expenses are stipulated by the shipping company and the port area, and the expenses are fixed. Most shipping company fees are in US dollars, but some are settled in local currency, which is usually stated at the back of the bill of lading.
The port charges are in local currency and are all ladder charges. For example, Maersk small box (RMB)
1-7 days free
8-15 days 55 / day
16-20 days 150 / day
21 days + 300 / day
